Union-Walks: Trusting In God

Every morning I wake up and cook breakfast for my family, but one particular morning my oldest, Noah who is 3, comes into the kitchen and the first thing he asks me is, “Daddy, can I have hashbrowns?” He’s been doing this every morning since he could talk. So, it’s become a tradition for me to make that for him. Typically by the time he asks me, I’ve already made them for him because I just know what he wants.

But one morning I woke up to do I always do, make his hashbrowns. Like clockwork, my son Noah comes in and asks, “Daddy, can I have hashbrowns?” I replied, “I’ve already got it made for you buddy!”

In that moment the Holy Spirit whispered to me so clearly, “Jason did you see that?” I said, “Yeah, I made his hashbrowns because I know that is what he wants and likes.” He said, “isn’t that the same with you? I know what it is that you need and want before you even ask me.”

Each day, I have his hashbrown made for him, but what if he begins asking for a hashbrown for the next day? It wouldn’t be fresh. It would be soggy and perhaps cold. So, why worry about tomorrow when we have today? We often worry about the future and we don’t even realize that it causes us so much anxiety.

All, if not most of our worry is rooted in anxiety and our anxiety is rooted in a false narrative that Yahweh would abandon us or no longer provide for the needs we have. But Jesus says that our Father already knows what we need before we ask Him (Matt. 6:8).

God takes care of us out of the abundance of his love and goodness and so when I cook for my family, I am feeding them out of the abundance of my goodness and love just like Abba does for me and all of humanity. He provides not because we did something for Him in return, but out of His own goodness and love that He does it for us.

Because the religion of the west has taught us to take matters into our own hands by adding to what Christ has already done, we have found ourselves becoming so individualistic and walking independent from Yahweh, and we have exposed ourselves to measures of anxiety that we were never meant to carry in the first place.

Here I am at 37 years of age and I am still learning to trust, to rest, to wait, to keep my sails to the wind (Spirit). When we put trust in ourselves, it reveals that we haven’t allowed ourselves to rest in the finished work of Christ. He’s done it all, we just get to live our lives through him and we have the pleasure of walking in our purpose as a result.

A good friend once said to me, “Jason, our goal in this life is to get such a revelation of our identity and how much we are loved that we stop trusting in ourselves to take care of us.”

Abba is the sole provider. Yes, I am a provider of my family, but He is the provider. Whatever I give to my family has to flow from the Trinity first or else what I give isn’t enough because it’s done apart from Him. Whatever it is that we are trusting Abba for, we have got to know that we are on what I like to call union-walks.

On these walks we find ourselves obsessed with the destination that we simply forget about the walk. I am here to tell you that Abba is in it for the walk. Sure, He wants to see us discover our purpose and identity but it should never take precedence over our fellowship with Him.

The psalmist says, “Direct me, Yahweh, throughout my journey so I can experience your plans for my life. Reveal the life-paths that are pleasing to you. Escort me into your truth; take me by the hand and treach me (Psalm 25:4-5).”

The life-paths are union-walks. And our union is forged on the walk. This is where we find our true selves. It’s where we learn to trust in Him and trust in the union that He has brought us into. So whatever it is that you are trusting Abba for, let Him take you by the hand. Let Him escort you into His truth about you and you’ll find yourself walking toward and in your destiny. He’s already prepared it for you much like how I prepared my sons breakfast before he even asks.
